If you’ve seen the movie “Eat.Pray.Love”, you might understand why I’ve been thinking about it for the past few days. In the movie, Julia Roberts thought she had everything she wanted in life: a home, a husband and a successful career. But then, she gets divorced and finds herself at a turning point in her life. She realizes that she is confused about her priorities in life. She steps out of her comfort zone and embarks on a quest of self-discovery. She experiences some wonderful things and meets some amazing people. She opens herself up to new opportunities and finds herself a new normal.
With the pandemic and our new normal, I can’t help but dwell upon the analogy between our current situation and the movie. We kept telling ourselves that everything was okay. A couple of months ago, cancelling dinner with friends to meet a work deadline was not a big deal. Missing your daughter’s dance recital for an important meeting was unfortunate. But today, we are facing a dreadful pandemic, and we are at our own crossroad. And yes, I think it’s time we set our priorities right.
So Eat. Eat to nourish your body. Try not to eat out of boredom. Eat with someone if you can. If not physically, try eating together virtually. If you can’t eat with others, cook with others. Planning a healthy meal and cooking with someone else can be fun.
And Pray. You don’t have to be religious to pray. You don’t have to pray to a God or Goddess. You just need to practice mindfulness. Meditate. Appreciate what you have. Keep the negative vibes away and think positive.
And Love. Love yourself. Love Mother Nature. Love what you have. Love who you have. For tomorrow is unknown. Don’t hold yourself back, don’t keep yourself from expressing your feelings to those who matter. Pay a compliment. Do a good deed. Help someone. Smile at a stranger. I believe every little act of selflessness is sure to pay itself forward.
No one knows how their story ends. But we can open to a new normal and find contentment if we set our priorities right. In the end, it’s all about what we want for ourselves.
